まず日本語で考える

日本語では「これは何ですか」のように疑問詞の位置が動詞の前後で自由に動きますが、英語の疑問詞は必ず文の最初に置きます。そのあとにdo/does、またはbe動詞を続け、最後に主語が来ます。

howと組み合わせる表現

値段・数・時間の長さを尋ねるときに使います。

疑問詞のあとの語順

be動詞の文はWhere is the station?のように疑問詞のすぐあとにbe動詞が来ます。一般動詞の文はWhen does the train leave?のようにdo/doesを挟みます。

例文

• What is this called in English? — これは英語で何と呼びますか。
• Where is the nearest station? — 一番近い駅はどこですか。
• When does the museum open? — その美術館はいつ開きますか。
• Who is that woman over there? — あそこにいる女性は誰ですか。
• How do I get to the airport? — 空港へはどうやって行けばいいですか。
• How much is this ticket? — この切符はいくらですか。
• How many days are you staying? — 何日滞在する予定ですか。
• How long does the flight take? — そのフライトはどのくらいかかりますか。

よくある間違い

• × Where the station is? → ○ Where is the station?(疑問詞のあとにbe動詞、主語は最後)
• × What means this word? → ○ What does this word mean?(一般動詞の疑問文にはdoes/doが必要)
• × How much people?(数えられる名詞にhow muchを使ってしまう) → ○ How many people?(数えられる名詞はhow many)

ミニ会話(駅の窓口で)

場面: 駅の窓口で、BenがスタッフのAnnaに切符について聞いている。

• Ben : Excuse me, where is the ticket office? — すみません、切符売り場はどこですか。
• Anna : It's over there, next to the entrance. — あちらです、入口の隣ですよ。
• Ben : Thank you. How much is a ticket to the city center? — ありがとうございます。中心街までの切符はいくらですか。
• Anna : It's five dollars. — 5ドルです。
• Ben : And how long does it take? — それでどのくらい時間がかかりますか。
• Anna : About twenty minutes. — 約20分です。
