There is/areと場所の前置詞

この課でできるようになること

日本語の「ここに机があります」には主語だれ・なにの話か第1課で正式に学ぶがありません。英語ではThere is/There areという特別な形を主語として使います。

あとに続く名詞人・物・ことの名前第3課で正式に学ぶが単数1人・1つ第3課で正式に学ぶか複数かでis/areを選びます。存在をたずねるときはAre there ...?のように、is/areを主語の前に出します。

場所を言うときは、前置詞を名詞の直前に置きます。日本語の「〜の」の位置につられて語順を変えないよう注意します。

× Here is a bank. → ○ There is a bank near here.(「〜がある」はHere isではなくThere is/are)
× There is two chairs. → ○ There are two chairs.(複数名詞にはareを使う)
× in the table → ○ on the table(触れている面の上はon)

場面: ホテルのフロントで、KenがスタッフのAnnaに近くの店について聞いている。

Ken : Excuse me, is there a restaurant near the hotel? — すみません、ホテルの近くにレストランはありますか。
Anna : Yes, there is a nice one next to the station. — はい、駅の隣にいいお店がありますよ。
Ken : Is there a bank in the hotel? — ホテルの中に銀行はありますか。
Anna : No, there isn't. But there is an ATM in front of the hotel. — いいえ、ありません。でもホテルの前にATMがあります。
Ken : Great, thank you. — よかった、ありがとうございます。

「〜がある」はThere is(単数)/There are(複数)。否定はisn't/aren't、疑問はIs there ...?/Are there ...?。
in/ɪn/(中)・on(上)・under(下)・next to(隣)・between(間)・in front of(前)で場所を表す。
前置詞は名詞の直前に置く。日本語の「〜の」に引きずられて語順を変えない。
