まず日本語で考える

日本語の「ここに机があります」には主語がありません。英語ではThere is/There areという特別な形を主語として使います。あとに続く名詞が単数か複数かでis/areを選びます。場所を言うときはin(中に)・on(上に)・under(下に)などの前置詞を名詞の前に置きます。

名詞の数に合わせてis/areを選びます。

場所を表す前置詞

名詞の直前に置きます。日本語の「〜の」の位置につられて語順を変えないよう注意します。

例文

• There is a bank near here. — この近くに銀行があります。
• There are two chairs in the room. — 部屋に椅子が2脚あります。
• Is there a bathroom on this floor? — このフロアにお手洗いはありますか。
• Your key is on the table. — 鍵はテーブルの上にあります。
• The station is next to the hotel. — 駅はホテルの隣です。
• Put your bag under the seat. — かばんは座席の下に置いてください。
• There is a park in front of my house. — 家の前に公園があります。

よくある間違い

• × Here is a bank. → ○ There is a bank near here.(「〜がある」はHere isではなくThere is/are)
• × There is two chairs. → ○ There are two chairs.(複数名詞にはareを使う)
• × in the table(「上に」の意味でinを使ってしまう) → ○ on the table(触れている面の上はon)

ミニ会話(ホテルのフロントで)

場面: ホテルのフロントで、KenがスタッフのAnnaに近くの店について聞いている。

• Ken : Excuse me, is there a restaurant near the hotel? — すみません、ホテルの近くにレストランはありますか。
• Anna : Yes, there is a nice one next to the station. — はい、駅の隣にいいお店がありますよ。
• Ken : Is there a bank in the hotel? — ホテルの中に銀行はありますか。
• Anna : No, there isn't. But there is an ATM in front of the hotel. — いいえ、ありません。でもホテルの前にATMがあります。
• Ken : Great, thank you. — よかった、ありがとうございます。
