まず日本語で考える

日本語は「もっと」「一番」を形容詞の前に置くだけですが、英語は形容詞そのものの形を変えます。
短い形容詞は語尾に-er/-estを付け、長い形容詞の前にはmore/mostを置きます。この使い分けが英語独特の発想です。

-er/-estを付ける形容詞

more/mostを付ける形容詞

2音節以上の長い形容詞の多くはmore/mostを前に置きます。

• beautiful → more beautiful / most beautiful
• expensive → more expensive / most expensive
• famous → more famous / most famous

不規則な比較級・最上級

例文

• Tokyo is bigger than Osaka. — 東京は大阪より大きいです
• This bag is the biggest of all. — このかばんが全部の中で一番大きいです
• She is happier than before. — 彼女は以前より幸せです
• This book is more interesting than that one. — この本はあの本より面白いです
• This is the most expensive restaurant in town. — これは町で一番高いレストランです
• My English is better than last year. — 私の英語は去年より上達しました
• Today is the worst day of my week. — 今日は今週で一番ひどい日です
• Which is faster, the bus or the train? — バスと電車、どちらが速いですか

よくある間違い

• × more taller → ○ taller(-erとmoreを同時に使わない)
• × gooder → ○ better(goodの比較級は不規則な形betterを使う)
• × the most tallest → ○ the tallest(-estとmostを同時に使わない)

ミニ会話(買い物で比べる)

場面: MikaとBenが店でかばんを比べている。

• Mika : This bag is bigger than that one. — このかばんはあっちより大きいね
• Ben : Yes, but it's more expensive too. — うん、でも値段も高いよ
• Mika : Which one is the best for travel? — 旅行に一番いいのはどれかな
• Ben : I think the smaller one is better. It's lighter. — 小さい方がいいと思う。軽いから
