関係副詞と非制限用法

まず日本語で考える

「彼が生まれた街」のように、場所や時、理由を説明する文をつなげるとき、英語では関係副詞を使います。
where/when/whyは、それぞれ前置詞+which(in which等)の代わりになる、短く自然な言い方です。

関係副詞の形

関係副詞は「前置詞+関係代名詞」の代わりに使えます。

非制限用法

関係代名詞の前にコンマを置くと、先行詞を限定せず補足情報を加える言い方になります。whichはコンマの後で前の文全体を受けることもできます。

例文

• This is the town where I grew up. — ここは私が育った街だ
• I remember the day when we first met. — 私たちが初めて会った日を覚えている
• That's the reason why he was late. — それが彼が遅れた理由だ
• My father, who is 70 now, still works part-time. — 私の父は今70歳だが、まだパートで働いている
• We visited Kyoto, where my grandmother was born. — 私たちは京都を訪れた。そこは祖母が生まれた場所だ
• He passed the exam, which surprised everyone. — 彼は試験に合格した。それはみんなを驚かせた
• This is the restaurant where we had our first date. — ここは私たちが初デートをしたレストランだ
• Tom, whose sister lives in Paris, visits France every year. — Tomは妹がパリに住んでいて、毎年フランスを訪れる

よくある間違い

• × This is the town which I grew up. → ○ This is the town where I grew up.(whichの後は主語・目的語が欠けた文が続く。場所を説明するときはwhereかin which)
• × My mother who lives in Osaka called me. → ○ My mother, who lives in Osaka, called me.(母は1人しかいないので非制限用法。コンマが必要)
• × He was late, that surprised his boss. → ○ He was late, which surprised his boss.(前の文全体を受けるのはwhich。thatは非制限用法で使えない)

ミニ会話(思い出の場所を話す)

場面: EmmaとKenが、旅行の思い出について話している。

• Emma : Do you remember the hotel where we stayed last year? — 去年私たちが泊まったホテル覚えてる?
• Ken : Yes, that's the place where I tried real Italian pizza. — うん、そこで本場のピザを初めて食べた場所だよ
• Emma : Right. That was the day when everything went perfectly. — そうだね。あの日はすべてがうまくいった日だった
• Ken : It was, which is why I want to go back this year. — そうだね、だから今年も戻りたいんだ
• Emma : Same here. Let's plan the trip soon. — 私も同じ。早く旅行の計画を立てよう
