The person who springs to mind is my grandfather, who's eighty-four now and still one of the most interesting people I know.
We've obviously known each other my whole life, but it's really in the last ten years that we've become close. I try to visit him once a month, and we usually end up drinking tea for hours while he tells stories. He's a genuine treasure trove of them — he started a small printing business from nothing in the 1960s, went bankrupt once, rebuilt everything, and somehow stayed cheerful through all of it.
What fascinates me is that he's remarkably young at heart. He video-calls me to ask about smartphones and recently started learning English on an app, at eighty-four! But more than that, his stories put my own problems in perspective. Whenever work feels overwhelming, an afternoon with him reminds me that most crises look small from a distance of fifty years.

Less and less, I'm afraid. The main reason is structural: in Japan, the three-generation household has largely disappeared, so daily contact between grandparents and grandchildren has gone with it. In my own case, I see my grandfather monthly at best, whereas my father grew up in the same house as his. That said, I've noticed some positive counter-trends — community centres now run programmes pairing seniors with students. But overall, the generations mostly live in separate worlds, which I think impoverishes both.
