The piece of technology I want to talk about is my pair of noise-cancelling headphones, which I bought about three years ago and now consider completely indispensable.

The deepest change is that work has been untethered from place. A decade ago, working meant being in an office; now, with cloud tools and video calls, a team can be spread across five countries — my own company hires people we've never met in person. Technology has also automated the routine layer of most jobs, pushing humans toward judgement and communication. The flip side is that work now follows us home in our pockets, blurring boundaries that used to protect us. So it's liberation and intrusion in the same package.
