I'd like to talk about my friend Kenta — we go way back, almost twenty years now.
We met on the first day of junior high school, purely because our surnames put us next to each other in the classroom. We bonded over a shared obsession with football and, later, a shared inability to talk to girls. Since then our lives have gone in completely different directions — he's a chef in Osaka and I work in Tokyo — but the friendship has survived every move.
These days we keep in touch mostly through a group chat that's ninety percent terrible puns, and we make a point of meeting up two or three times a year. What makes the friendship precious is that we can go six months without talking and then pick up exactly where we left off. He's seen me through my worst moments — a failed exam, a bad breakup — and I've done the same for him. That kind of mutual trust takes decades to build, and I honestly think it's irreplaceable.

質問
Is it easy for adults to make new friends?
モデル回答
On the whole, no — and I think the reason is opportunity rather than personality. School forces you to spend a thousand hours a year with the same people, which is exactly the repeated, unplanned contact that friendship needs. Adult life offers almost none of that: we meet colleagues, but hierarchy and professionalism get in the way. That said, adults who join clubs — sports teams, book groups — seem to recreate those conditions successfully. So it's not impossible; it just no longer happens by default.
