The city at the top of my bucket list is Lisbon, in Portugal.
I first heard about it, of all places, through a documentary about tram systems — Lisbon has these rattling yellow trams from the 1930s that climb impossibly steep, narrow streets. Then a colleague went two years ago and came back raving about it, showing me photos of tiled buildings glowing in the evening light, and that sealed it.
If I go — when I go — I don't want a tight itinerary. I'd rather spend a week just wandering through the old quarters, riding tram 28 end to end, eating custard tarts in the morning, and listening to live fado music at night. I'd love to take a day trip along the coast to Sintra as well.
What draws me is the combination: it's steeped in history, from the age of explorers, yet it's supposed to be relaxed and affordable, which is not something you can say about Paris or London. And there's something poetic about a country that once mapped the world now sitting quietly at the edge of Europe. I want to get a feel for that atmosphere myself.

Why do some cities attract more visitors than others?

I'd point to two things: a distinctive identity, and how easily that identity can be photographed. Cities like Paris or Kyoto own a clear image — you know exactly what experience you're buying. The rise of social media has amplified this: places that look good in pictures, like Santorini, get a self-reinforcing flood of visitors. Accessibility matters too, of course; a direct budget flight can transform a city's fortunes. But plenty of well-connected cities stay ignored, so ultimately I'd say story beats infrastructure.
