Autumn, without question. After the brutally humid Japanese summer, that first morning of crisp autumn air feels like a reward. It's also the best season for food — everything from chestnuts to mackerel is at its peak. I basically plan my hiking calendar around October.

Does the weather ever affect your mood?

More than I'd like to admit. A string of grey, rainy days during the rainy season definitely drags my energy down, whereas a clear blue sky makes me weirdly optimistic about everything. I've even bought one of those daylight lamps to get through the gloomier weeks.
