A few close friends, definitely. I'd rather have three people I can call at midnight than thirty I only exchange new-year greetings with. My closest friends have stuck with me through thick and thin, and that kind of trust simply can't be spread across a large group.

We met in our first week of university, in the most unremarkable way — we were assigned to the same lab group. We hit it off immediately over a shared hatred of eight a.m. classes. Fifteen years on, we still catch up over coffee almost every month.
