  1. Should governments regulate the use of artificial intelligence more strictly?
  2. Is social media doing more harm than good to society? —
  3. Should children be given smartphones before the age of thirteen? — 13
  4. Will technology eventually replace the need for human teachers? —
  5. Should companies be allowed to collect personal data without users' explicit consent? —

I believe governments should regulate the use of artificial intelligence more strictly, and I would like to explain two reasons for this view.

First, AI systems are already making decisions that directly affect people's lives, from approving loans to screening job applicants, yet these systems often operate without sufficient transparency. Without clear regulation, it is difficult for citizens to understand or challenge decisions made by algorithms, which raises serious concerns about fairness and accountability.

Second, the pace of AI development is outstripping the ability of existing laws to address new risks, such as the spread of deepfakes or the misuse of personal data. If governments wait too long to act, harmful practices may become deeply embedded in industries before any rules are put in place, making them much harder to reverse.

Of course, regulation should be carefully designed so that it does not stifle beneficial innovation. Governments could work closely with technology companies and independent experts to create flexible frameworks that protect the public while still allowing progress.

For these reasons, I firmly believe that stricter, well-designed regulation is necessary to ensure that artificial intelligence develops in a way that benefits society as a whole, rather than causing unintended harm.

Some people say that regulation will slow down innovation. How would you respond to that argument?

I would say that well-designed regulation does not have to slow down innovation. Instead, it can create clear rules that help companies build trust with the public, which can actually support long-term growth in the industry.

Can you give a specific example of AI being used in a way that raises fairness concerns?

One example is the use of AI in hiring, where an algorithm might unintentionally favor certain candidates based on biased historical data. This can lead to unfair outcomes for qualified applicants from underrepresented groups.

Do you think all countries should follow the same rules regarding AI, or should each country set its own standards?

I think some baseline international standards are useful, especially for issues like data privacy that cross national borders. However, each country should still have the flexibility to add its own rules based on local values and circumstances.

What responsibility do individual users have, rather than governments, when it comes to using AI responsibly?

Individual users have a responsibility to think critically about the information AI systems provide, rather than accepting it without question. Users should also be mindful of what personal data they share with AI-powered services.

  1. Should single-use plastics be banned worldwide? —
  2. Is it fair to ask developing countries to reduce carbon emissions at the same pace as developed countries? —
  3. Should individuals bear more responsibility than corporations for fighting climate change? —
  4. Will renewable energy be able to fully replace fossil fuels within the next fifty years?
  5. Should meat consumption be taxed to reduce its environmental impact? —

I do not believe individuals should bear more responsibility than corporations for fighting climate change, and I would like to explain why.

To begin with, a relatively small number of large corporations are responsible for the vast majority of global greenhouse gas emissions. No matter how carefully individuals reduce their personal energy use, these efforts cannot offset the scale of emissions produced by industrial activity, transportation networks, and energy production.

In addition, individuals often have limited power to change the systems they depend on. A person may want to avoid plastic packaging, for instance, but if every product on the shelf is wrapped in plastic, that choice is effectively taken away from them. Real change requires corporations to redesign their products and supply chains.

This does not mean individual action is meaningless. Small changes in daily habits can still matter, and public pressure from consumers can push companies toward more responsible practices.

However, placing the main burden on individuals risks distracting attention from the corporations and industries that have the greatest power to reduce emissions. For this reason, I believe corporations, supported by strong government regulation, should carry the greater share of responsibility.

Some people argue that if everyone changed their own habits, the total effect would be significant. What is your response?

It is true that collective individual action can add up over time, and I do not deny that. However, even the combined effect of individual changes is still small compared to what could be achieved by regulating major industrial emitters directly.

How can governments encourage corporations to take more responsibility for their emissions?

Governments can introduce carbon pricing, which makes it more costly for companies to emit greenhouse gases, encouraging them to invest in cleaner technology. They can also set legally binding emissions targets with real penalties for non-compliance.

Do you think consumers have any power to influence how corporations behave?

Yes, consumers do have some power, particularly when they organize and choose to support companies with better environmental practices. This kind of pressure has already pushed some corporations to change their packaging or sourcing methods.

Is it realistic to expect corporations to prioritize the environment over profit?

It may not be realistic to expect corporations to prioritize the environment purely out of goodwill, since they are ultimately driven by profit. That is exactly why strong regulation and financial incentives are necessary to align their interests with environmental goals.

  1. Should university education be free for all students? —
  2. Is standardized testing an effective way to measure a student's ability? —
  3. Should schools place more emphasis on creativity than on academic knowledge? —
  4. Is studying abroad essential for developing a global perspective? —
  5. Should students be allowed to choose their own subjects from an early age? —

I believe that university education should be made free for all students, and I would like to give two main reasons for this position.

Firstly, access to higher education should not depend on a family's financial situation. When students are forced to take on large amounts of debt or give up their studies due to cost, society loses out on the talents and potential contributions of capable individuals who simply could not afford tuition.

Secondly, a more educated population tends to benefit the entire economy in the long run. Countries with higher rates of university graduates often see increased innovation, higher tax revenue over time, and lower rates of unemployment, which can offset the initial cost of funding free education.

Naturally, there are challenges to consider, such as how to fund this policy without raising taxes too sharply or overcrowding universities. These issues could be addressed gradually, for example by starting with free tuition for students from lower-income families before expanding the policy further.

For these reasons, I believe that working toward free university education is a worthwhile long-term investment in both individual opportunity and the strength of society as a whole.

How would you address concerns that free university education might lower the quality of education due to overcrowding?

I would suggest that governments increase funding for university infrastructure and faculty alongside free tuition, rather than treating them as separate issues. A gradual rollout would also give institutions time to expand capacity properly.

Do you think free education could reduce students' motivation to study seriously?

I do not think cost is the main factor driving students' motivation to study. Most students are motivated by career goals or personal interest, and universities can still maintain academic standards through entrance requirements and performance evaluations.

Should the government also cover living expenses for university students, not just tuition?

I think some level of support for living expenses would help students from low-income families the most, since tuition is often not the only financial barrier. However, this support could be limited to those who genuinely need it, rather than applying to everyone.

What would you say to someone who believes people should pay for their own education because they benefit from it personally?

I would agree that individuals do benefit personally, but I would add that society benefits as well, through a more skilled workforce and stronger economy. Since the benefits are shared, it makes sense for the cost to be shared too, through public funding.

  1. Should wealthy nations be required to accept more refugees? —
  2. Is globalization mainly beneficial or harmful to local cultures? —
  3. Should international organizations have more power to intervene in domestic conflicts? —
  4. Is a common global language necessary for international cooperation? —
  5. Should tourism be restricted in places suffering from overtourism? —

I believe that tourism should be restricted in places suffering from overtourism, and I would like to share two reasons for this view.

First, excessive numbers of visitors can seriously damage the very things that attract tourists in the first place, such as historic sites, natural landscapes, and fragile ecosystems. Once these places are degraded through overuse, the damage can take decades to repair, if it can be repaired at all.

Second, overtourism often lowers the quality of life for local residents. When a town's streets are constantly crowded, housing prices are driven up by short-term rentals, and public services are strained beyond their capacity, the people who actually live there can end up feeling like strangers in their own community.

I recognize that tourism also brings significant economic benefits, and local businesses often depend heavily on visitor spending. Restrictions should therefore be designed carefully, such as limiting daily visitor numbers or introducing entry fees, rather than banning tourism altogether.

Taking these points together, I believe that reasonable restrictions are necessary to protect both the environment and the well-being of local communities, while still allowing tourism to continue in a more sustainable way.

What specific measures could a city take to reduce the negative effects of overtourism?

A city could introduce a cap on the number of daily visitors to particularly fragile sites, or charge an entry fee that is reinvested in maintenance and local infrastructure. Promoting less crowded neighborhoods or off-peak travel seasons could also help spread out the impact.

Do you think restricting tourism could hurt the local economy too much?

If restrictions are too extreme, they could hurt small businesses that depend on tourist spending. That is why I believe restrictions should be gradual and carefully designed, rather than a sudden and complete shutdown of tourism.

Who should be responsible for deciding how many tourists a place can accept: local governments or national governments?

I think local governments are better positioned to make this decision, since they understand the specific conditions and needs of their own communities. National governments could still provide general guidelines or funding support, but the details should be decided locally.

Do you think tourists themselves have any responsibility to behave more sustainably?

Yes, I think tourists share some responsibility, such as respecting local rules, avoiding fragile areas, and being mindful of how their spending affects the community. Responsible behavior by individual travelers can make a real difference when adopted widely.

  1. Should a four-day work week become the standard in most industries? —
  2. Is it better for young people to start their own business rather than join a large company? —
  3. Should there be a legal limit on how much a CEO can earn compared to average employees? — CEO
  4. Will automation create more jobs than it destroys in the long run? —
  5. Should governments provide a universal basic income to all citizens? —

I believe that a four-day work week should become the standard in most industries, and I would like to explain two reasons for this view.

First, research from companies that have already trialed shorter work weeks suggests that employee productivity does not necessarily fall when working hours are reduced. In many cases, workers become more focused and efficient during their working hours, partly because they have more time to rest and recover.

Second, a shorter work week can significantly improve employees' mental health and work-life balance. With an extra day off each week, people have more opportunity to spend time with family, pursue personal interests, or simply recover from work-related stress, which can reduce burnout in the long run.

I acknowledge that this model may not suit every industry, particularly those that require constant staffing, such as hospitals or emergency services. In these cases, companies would need to find creative scheduling solutions rather than applying a one-size-fits-all approach.

Taking these points together, I believe that where a four-day work week is practical, it offers clear benefits for both employees and employers, and it deserves serious consideration as a new standard.

What kind of evidence would convince a company that a four-day work week is worth trying?

Concrete data from similar companies showing steady or improved productivity, along with lower staff turnover and fewer sick days, would likely be the most convincing evidence. A well-designed trial period within the company itself could also provide direct proof.

How should industries that require constant staffing, like hospitals, approach this idea?

These industries could consider rotating shift systems so that employees still average a shorter work week over a longer period, such as a month, rather than every single week. Hiring additional part-time staff could also help cover the gaps.

Do you think a shorter work week could lead to lower pay for employees?

I believe pay should remain the same as before, since the goal is to work more efficiently within fewer hours, not to reduce compensation. Reducing pay along with hours would undermine the main benefits of this policy for employees.

Is a four-day work week realistic for small businesses with limited staff?

It may be more challenging for small businesses, but it is not necessarily impossible, especially if they restructure workflows or invest in tools that improve efficiency. Some small businesses might need to adopt the policy more gradually than larger companies.

  1. Should governments do more to support an aging population? —
  2. Is preserving traditional culture more important than embracing globalization? —
  3. Should mental health education be a required part of school curricula? —
  4. Is it the government's responsibility to regulate the food industry to fight obesity? —
  5. Should elderly people be encouraged to keep working past the traditional retirement age? —

I believe that mental health education should be a required part of school curricula, and I would like to explain two main reasons for this view.

First, many mental health conditions, such as anxiety and depression, often begin during childhood or adolescence, yet young people frequently lack the language or knowledge to recognize what they are experiencing. Teaching students about mental health early can help them identify problems in themselves or their friends before those problems become more serious.

Second, mental health education can help reduce the stigma that still surrounds these issues in many societies. When students learn about mental health in the same matter-of-fact way they learn about physical health, they are more likely to seek help without feeling ashamed or embarrassed, and to support classmates who are struggling.

Some people worry that schools already have too much content to cover and that adding another subject would overwhelm the curriculum. However, mental health education does not need to be a separate, lengthy subject; it could be integrated into existing health or homeroom classes in a practical, ongoing way.

For these reasons, I believe that making mental health education a required part of school life would provide students with tools that benefit them throughout their entire lives.

How could schools integrate mental health education without overloading teachers who are not trained in this area?

Schools could bring in trained counselors or outside specialists for regular sessions, rather than expecting classroom teachers to handle it alone. Providing teachers with basic training and simple materials would also make it easier to incorporate mental health topics naturally.

Do you think parents should also be involved in mental health education, not just schools?

Yes, I think parental involvement is very important, since children spend a great deal of time at home. Schools could offer workshops or resources to help parents recognize signs of mental health struggles and support their children effectively.

Could talking about mental health in school actually make some students more anxious?

That is a fair concern, but I think the risk can be minimized if the education is presented in a calm, factual, and age-appropriate way, rather than in a way that is frightening or overly dramatic. Trained professionals leading these lessons would help ensure that.

Do you think there is a link between mental health education and academic performance?

Yes, I believe there is a meaningful link, because students who are struggling emotionally often find it harder to concentrate and perform well academically. Supporting students' mental health can therefore have a positive effect on their overall school performance as well.

Should the voting age be lowered to sixteen? I believe the voting age should be lowered to sixteen, and I would like to offer two reasons in support of this position. First, many sixteen-year-olds today are already deeply engaged with political and social issues, particularly those that will affect their own futures, such as climate policy and education funding. Denying them the right to vote ignores the fact that they are directly affected by these decisions, even though they cannot yet influence them. Second, lowering the voting age could strengthen long-term civic engagement. Research on countries that have already lowered the voting age suggests that voting at a younger age, often while still supported by school and family structures, can help establish the habit of voting early, leading to higher participation throughout a person's life. I recognize the concern that sixteen-year-olds may lack the life experience of older voters. However, voting rights are not typically granted based on a strict measure of experience or knowledge; many adults who vote also have limited direct knowledge of every policy area. For these reasons, I believe that lowering the voting age to sixteen would create a more representative democracy and encourage lifelong civic participation.

環境Should nuclear power be expanded as a solution to climate change? I believe that nuclear power should be expanded as part of the solution to climate change, and I would like to explain two reasons for this position. First, nuclear power produces electricity with very low greenhouse gas emissions, and unlike solar or wind power, it can generate a stable and continuous supply of energy regardless of weather conditions. This reliability makes it a valuable complement to other renewable sources as countries work to move away from fossil fuels. Second, advances in nuclear technology have made modern reactors significantly safer than older designs, with better systems in place to prevent accidents and manage waste. While past incidents have understandably made the public cautious, judging today's technology solely by decades-old accidents overlooks meaningful safety improvements. I acknowledge that concerns about nuclear waste disposal and high construction costs remain legitimate challenges. Governments would need to invest in long-term waste management solutions and provide financial support to make new projects economically viable. Taking these points together, I believe that a balanced energy strategy that includes nuclear power, alongside renewable sources like solar and wind, offers one of the most realistic paths toward significantly reducing carbon emissions.

教育Should critical thinking be taught as a separate subject in schools? I believe that critical thinking should be taught as a separate subject in schools, rather than left to be absorbed indirectly through other classes. First, critical thinking is a skill that needs to be practiced explicitly and systematically, much like mathematics or writing. When it is only touched upon occasionally within other subjects, students may never receive focused instruction on how to evaluate evidence, recognize bias, or construct logical arguments. Second, in an age of widespread misinformation, the ability to think critically has become essential for good citizenship, not just academic success. Students who are trained to question sources and analyze information critically are better equipped to navigate news, social media, and political debates responsibly throughout their lives. Some may argue that an already crowded curriculum has no room for another subject. However, a dedicated critical thinking course does not need to be lengthy; even a single class period per week, focused on practical exercises, could make a meaningful difference over several years of schooling. For these reasons, I believe that treating critical thinking as its own subject would give students a clear and lasting foundation for making sound judgments in their personal, academic, and civic lives.

科学Should self-driving cars be allowed on public roads without a human driver present? I believe that self-driving cars should be allowed on public roads without a human driver present, once they meet strict and independently verified safety standards. First, statistical evidence increasingly shows that a large proportion of traffic accidents are caused by human error, such as distraction, fatigue, or poor judgment. Well-tested autonomous systems, which do not suffer from these limitations, have the potential to make roads significantly safer over time. Second, fully driverless vehicles could greatly expand mobility for people who currently cannot drive, including elderly individuals and people with certain disabilities, giving them greater independence in their daily lives. At the same time, I recognize that the technology must be proven trustworthy before widespread adoption. Rigorous testing, transparent reporting of accidents, and clear legal frameworks for responsibility in the event of a crash are essential prerequisites, not optional extras. Given these safeguards, I believe permitting driverless cars on public roads represents a reasonable next step, since the potential benefits in safety and accessibility are too significant to dismiss simply because the technology feels unfamiliar.

国際Should international trade agreements prioritize environmental protection over economic growth? I believe that international trade agreements should give environmental protection at least equal priority to economic growth, rather than treating growth as the primary goal. First, economic growth that comes at the expense of the environment is ultimately unsustainable, since a damaged environment eventually undermines the very resources that economies depend on, from clean water to stable agriculture. Prioritizing short-term growth while ignoring environmental costs simply shifts the burden onto future generations. Second, trade agreements are one of the few tools capable of setting shared environmental standards across many countries at once. Without such coordinated rules, companies may simply relocate production to countries with weaker environmental regulations, undermining efforts made elsewhere. I understand the concern that strict environmental requirements could slow growth in developing economies that are still trying to industrialize. To address this, agreements could include support mechanisms, such as technology sharing or financial assistance, to help these countries meet standards without sacrificing development. For these reasons, I believe that placing environmental protection on equal footing with economic growth in trade agreements is necessary for genuinely sustainable global development.

経済Should there be stricter limits on how much debt a government can take on? I believe there should be stricter limits on how much debt a government can take on, and I would like to give two reasons for this view. First, excessive government debt can burden future generations, who may have to accept higher taxes or reduced public services simply to repay debt incurred long before they were able to have any say in the matter. Placing reasonable limits protects the interests of citizens who are not yet part of the political process. Second, very high levels of debt can make a country more vulnerable to economic shocks, since a large share of government revenue may need to go toward interest payments rather than essential services like healthcare or education, especially if interest rates rise unexpectedly. At the same time, I recognize that some borrowing, particularly during emergencies such as pandemics or economic recessions, can be necessary and beneficial. Strict limits should therefore include reasonable exceptions for extraordinary circumstances, rather than being applied rigidly in every situation. Taking these points together, I believe that clear, though flexible, debt limits would encourage more responsible long-term fiscal management without preventing governments from responding effectively to genuine emergencies.
